Finding Casey - Updated 30 May 2024

UPDATE, 7 September 2024

As you can see from the date below (2019), COVID killed the last vestiges of the Vancouver SF and F convention, VCon, which was wobbling on its legs, anyway. Times have changed and fandom no longer functions as it did. I miss it -- we did have a lot of fun at those cons -- but after five years I can't imagine it reviving.

So where will you find Casey the writer, these days?

Hard to say. See that image of the cross-stitched woman, below?

That is where I went.

My other half, and no, not my wife, but my non-speculative-fiction-writing self, writes almost exclusively about Brigit of Ireland, goddess and saint. When a few years ago she realised she was not just writing a few poems, but a book, I thought it over and decided to stop writing short stories until that project was finished. Otherwise, it never would be.

It took ten years to write it, find a publisher, and begin promoting it. I did actually write and publish a couple of stories in that time, but my main focus was A Brigit of Ireland Devotional - Sun Among Stars. The book, the classes I teach about her, webinars and speaking engagements, and simply the people I know or met along the way who were "Brigit curious" or committed devotees, these received, and still receive, the lion's share of my attention. With my very limited energy, Casey the writer got very short shrift.

I have quietened those efforts now, largely, and am putting my attention on a broader creative canvas: taking a drawing class with a friend, joining a writing group that focusses on freeing our ability to write the stories of our lives, engaging in singing practice with other elders, taking an Irish language class, steeping myself in mythology and doing the inner work around age and aging, and so on.

I am also prioritising my social life. Not going dancing or to the theatre, but walking with friends, playing games with niblings, seeing my loved ones much more than I have become used to doing, particularly since COVID-19.

My grand plan is simply to reduce stress and increase joy. I'm feeling my ill health and my age. I'm looking to relax a whole lot more and work a whole lot less. To rub against life and give it a wink and see where it goes from there.

So Casey the writer may resurface in small ways, but the way it looks now is that she wrote a few good stories, a couple of meh ones, a silly script or two and some poems. She learned a ton about writing from people like Eileen Kernaghan and their writing colleagues, she critiqued a lot of people's writing in the fairest way she could, and she tried to encourage folk in their craft. If she does start publishing stories again, she'll let you know here.

Hey Casey - it despite this post being from 2015 you apparently updated the information for this year at some point before the date change from Oct 12-14 to Oct 5-7.

Normally we wouldn't worry about a smattering of incorrect dates on the web, but since Google's algorithms for determining "priority results" for searches like "When is VCON 2018?" continue to return the wrong dates due to lingering references we would be very, very grateful if you could please update your information the details to reflect the correct dates!
